Discover: Bad Sounds – Avalanche

Bad Sounds

Bad Sounds “keep on keepin’ on” with their explosive, progressive pop agenda.

If you’ve been to see Rat Boy recently you’ll know he’s dragging round an explosive new Bath-based, melting pot-pop quintet called Bad-Sounds for support. They sound like the love child of Primal Scream, Beck and The Gorillaz – fuzzy guitars and hip-hoppy drums over unimpressed, Damon Albarn vocals. The band make remarkably good sounds and have a refreshingly healthy grip of musicianship, crafting simple-yet-effective groovers, sharper than the karate kicks in their videos.

Bad Sounds are fronted by Brothers Ewan and Callum and currently find themselves in the midst of their 10-date September tour propping-up the infamous Rat Boy. Having now released a number of singles independently gained a spot at Glasto on the BBC Introducing Stage and heralded ‘Tune Of The Week’ by Radio one’s Annie Mac, Bad Sounds climb ever higher on the ladder – and with the support of the BBC they’ll be ones to watch next year.

‘Avalanche’ the bands most successful single demonstrates their razor-sharp pop sensibilities perfectly. The scuzzy, funky drums gallop in the background while Ewan slaps on a retro wah-ing clav and harmonizing Prince/Michael Jackson dual vocals slice through in the background. Not only is the sonic experimentation on the track exciting but the blinding pop melody and glorious chorus show just how great the band is at crafting a tune.

Radio One similarly rewarded ‘Wages’, the band’s latest self-released/self-produced drop, with the tune of the week status. It’s got dramatic brass, bubbling synth sounds and a catchy-as-fuck melodic hook. It’s weaker than ‘Avalanche’ in terms of instrumentation but Bad Sounds very much continue to apply their enthusing, progressive agenda to indie, dance and hip-hop and Bruce Lee front-flip out the other end, with a highly decent, viral popper.

All-in-all Bad Sounds very much deliver in terms of supplying us with enthused, open-minded pop and a great groove. These are definitely ones to watch, they’re already at a high standard with their songwriting – they have the potential to do something really cool.
