Daffodildos challenge socio-political issues through catchy punk rock

The LGBTQIA+ scene in Brighton is thriving with some fantastic up and coming musicians and punk trio Daffodildos are fighting their corner.

Writing music with a carefree attitude, the band still tackle some challenging socio-political issues through their catchy songs. ‘No Pride’, the debut single from Daffodildos is exactly that; promoting queer rights and outing the commercialisation of Pride.

The track is a high-octane punk rock tune firmly rooted in early punk sounds with a nostalgic throwback to 00s emo. Shouty vocals from Emily Flea, and a flurry of fast-paced drums from Annie von Flange is completed by Captain Jax on bass and suitably brassy backing vocals.

‘No Pride’ touches on the fact that people mostly use Pride as an excuse to party when actually the rest of the year, the LGBTQIA+ community suffers from dangerous stigma and abuse. Lyrics like “We’re here, we’re queer, we’re never gonna disappear” and “Fighting for our rights our entire lives not just once a year” the song is a seriously catchy and upbeat way to grab the listener’s attention and make them stop and listen.

Singer and guitarist Emily Flea says: “I wrote it [No Pride] when I was on a bus in London during Pride Month, and I saw shops…banks… police cars with rainbow flags and I was like, ‘what’s this got to do with Pride’? They’re not with us, they’re against us!”

It’s clear that the Daffodildos are making waves in the queer and punk scene, using their voices to speak up on ethical issues, including sobriety and veganism. It really doesn’t matter whether you’re gay, straight, sober or even a fan of punk music, ‘No Pride’ promises to have you jumping around the room and giving both your middle fingers to the powers that be. Find the band on Instagram here.
