Coasts, a Bristol-based indie-pop band that has grown through many aesthetic changes and sudden bursts of fame. It is what keeps the band fresh. Within the past 6 months, they have released a debut album, toured the United States of America and also dived back into UK touring. Last night [Sunday 12th June] saw the end of their UK stretch with a blistering return performance at a Leeds favourite, The Brudenell Social Club.
Starting the night off was a local band that has certainly outgrown the term, local. Marsicans took to the stage performing ‘Far Away’ & ‘Gone’, which accompanied the groups of music lovers into the venue away from the downpour of rain outside. Vocal harmonies of Whitney’s ‘I Want to Dance with Somebody’ filled the room with energy and set a bar for the night to come. You could tell that they did not see this as a support set – But a set of theirs in it’s own right. They engaged with the crowds well and the fact that they are Leeds lads went down swimmingly.
Marsicans have been releasing music since 2014, and this year has seen 2 new tracks called ‘Arms of Another’ and ‘Swimming’. Both tracks have received substantial support from fans and radio airplay. In less than 2 weeks, they will take the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury for their first time ever.
Second we saw a good friend of the headliners take to the stage, leading by the name Huntar. He owned it by sampling original mixes and performing live vocals which electrified the room. A blend between soft and intricate pop to blasts of drum and bass hit the varied crowd at The Brudenell. His signature Diamond sign and an unexpected homage to Drake really connected with the crowd and got them involved with his party.
Huntar has dropped his latest track, 4AM and is gaining recognition through his remix-ready tracks. The likes of Wingtip, Deebs and Youngs Teflon have worked with Huntar.
At half past nine, the main act took place with Chris, Liam, James, David and Ben taking to the huddled Brudenell stage as Coasts. Instantly, the varied crowd ranging from 14-year-old girls who adore those to have graced the stage, to fully grown men who just can’t get enough indie-pop, tore the place up with screams and cheers. Wasting no time, they kicked off with well-known tracks from their self-entitled debut album.
‘Stay’, ‘Let Go’ and ‘Wash Away’ filled the set up with adrenaline packed pop and ‘You’ was also played after Chris told the crowd how much they gratitude the fans support. However, ‘A Rush of Blood’ and ‘Modern Love’ conveyed huge excitement from the band members and really saw them enjoying to perform.
Coming back on stage for their encore to play a ‘Made in Chelsea’ favourite saw Huntar help himself on stage to party with the band. ‘Oceans’ began and so did the stage invasion, so much so to the point where a Guitarist and Huntar had to vacate the stage to make way for crazed fans. A true spectacle by which the stage seemed to grow to allow more fans on stage.
All in all, a fantastic night and end to what could only be assumed as a manic 10-date UK tour.
