Close Up Artist Spotlight

CLOSEUP Artist Spotlight: Only Sun

High Wycombe indie pop superstars Only Sun are CLOSEUP Promotions’ Artist Spotlight this week! Now a four-piece after the departure of Daz earlier this month, the band are eager to get back on the road with fresh pop anthems. Guitarist Ed gives us the low-down on their new single ‘Bad Decisions’ and more…

Your new single ‘Bad Decisions’ dropped this week, what was it like being locked down, with no live shows and finishing off your new music?

The start of lockdown was planned to be a bit of a transitional period for us. We had our last big show booked in at a big local venue for the weekend after lockdown happened and we had a bunch of recording sessions booked in for just after that which had to be cancelled as well.

It was a weird time for us because we were heading into a temporary lull anyway to write and record a bunch of new music. We ended up having nothing to release and no live dates so we focussed on writing even more material which probably kept the four of us sane over that period! The WhatsApp group was filled with a tonne of new ideas!

What’s your dream slot, if you could play any festival/any support, who would it be?

I think if you asked us a year and a half ago, the hope was just to play a slot at Reading and Leeds. Having grown up going to Reading and finding our favourite new artists there, dragging each other to some new as yet unheard of act; there would have been this feeling that it had all come full circle for us.

However, myself (Ed) and Euan went to Glastonbury in 2019 and I was blown away by the enormity and variety of it. Without a doubt that is the best festival in the world and everyone else is competing for second place. I think any slot on any stage would be the dream slot for me now, it’d just be such an honour to play at Glastonbury. I’m sure some of the other boys would disagree of course!

Should we be expecting more Only Sun music before Christmas? (seeing the weather irony here)

In our heads, it’s Only Sun all year round. It’s a bit of a curse really hahaha. There will definitely be more music before Christmas, we can’t say yet how much new music there will be but there will definitely be some along with a heap of announcements.

What’s been your favourite ever live show?

We can’t really look any further than our sold-out headline at Camden Assembly last October. That was a really special and crazy evening that meant so much to us as a band and collectively made our years. It’s been nearly a year since that and it’s looking increasingly likely that our next big London headline won’t be until 2021 but we’re planning something really special for then.

Otherwise, I think we love a gig where something goes wrong. Last year on that tour, I fell off the stage at the end of NHS70 in Sheffield, dressed as Posh Spice, and went crashing through the stage monitors. Euan had to drag me up to continue and I dented my guitar a bit, but those are the gigs you vividly remember and look back on fondly.

Describe Only Sun in three words or less.

Colourful, Chaotic and Cheerful.

Thanks for that and big love for all the support as always!’
