Experimental pop artist John Dole is CLOSEUP Promotion’s Artist Spotlight this week as he is set to officially release his new single ‘Moving’ next Friday (September 25th). The Newcastle-based artist gives us a catch up on what it was like to record the track under lockdown and more.
Hey John! Great to chat. We’ve been fans for a while! Your new single ‘Moving’ is dropping soon via Snide Records, what was it like being locked down, with no live shows and finishing off your new music?
Honestly, it’s been weird, but not so different from my normal process. Being out playing shows is probably one of my favourite things to do, so I massively miss that, if anything it’s forced me to sit down and finish a bunch of stuff that’s been 90% of the way there though, one of the few positives I can take from the situation.
What’s your dream slot, if you could play any festival/any support, who would it be?
I’d love to play a show with Lauryn Hill, or D’angelo, in a small intimate venue, my favourite gigs have always been on the smaller side, feels more personal.
Spotify is such a massive player in the music industry these days, and is not short of controversy. Overall, do you see it as a good or bad thing?
I don’t think it’s inherently bad or good, it adds legitimacy to artists on the come up, but at the same time people say that artists aren’t paid their dues. I can see both sides of the argument. Personally I think it’s changed the landscape of music and how it is artists make their money is that bad or good, I don’t know.
What’s been your favourite ever live show? and of course, why!
I went to see the chariot in Nottingham a few years back and that was insane, the energy was palpable, I lost and found my glasses in the pit, got to meet the whole band, hung out with them in the club after, pretty solid night.
