American Airlines Is ‘Going Indie’

The world’s largest airline, American Airlines have recently announced that they have got rid of the boring acoustic and more popular and ‘well-known’ and are replacing it with “indie” (About time!).

On an internal AA blog, American Airlines representative, Barbara Delollis, wrote, “For 2015, they sought out a style of music that’s upbeat yet not distracting, helps American stand out from the competition and appeals to younger generations.”

Customer complaints about the previous playlists prompted the change, the company said.Hearing instrumental versions of popular songs played through in-flight entertainment systems has become ‘boring’ and ‘dull’, American Airlines passengers are listening to so called lesser-known artists like The xx, Phantogram, M83 and Haim while they board and wait to get off of their flights. They don’t really qualify as “lesser-known” bands.

Also on the blog, Brian Richardson, senior manager of American’s inflight entertainment and connectivity, added that American’s customers are excited for the change.

“The instrumental versions of pop songs had become tired and people were ready for a change. Our hip, indie music couples well with our new, state-of-the-art aircraft cabins,” Richardson said. “We’ve seen customers on aircraft take out their smartphones and use the Shazam app. Who would have thought that we’d be introducing some people to these indie artists?”

Social media savvy passengers seem to be much happier with the indie selections. Many have been tweeting about their surprise at hearing some of their favorite lesser-known artists’ songs coming through aircraft cabins.

Getting to know Southampton newcomer Daring Darling

Behind the bustling cargo shipyard and cultural city of Southampton is the 60s psych-rock artist Darling Darling making inroads across the south of England. Already one year into his smoothly sardonic and enthusiastically empathetic project, mastermind Matt Bisgrove has released three singles including his latest ‘Strangers’. It’s one of Bisgroves’ most mature pieces of work yet. The twinkling sounds, vocal layers and soaring atmospherics are stylistically embedded like you’re playing it on a vintage record player. Incorporating a lick of modern R&B from Frank Ocean and The Weeknd, ‘Strangers’ is a tasteful play on love, heartbreak, pity and pain all
