Once again, Florida’s Set It Off has gone and surprised us with their third full-length record, ‘Upside Down’, their slightly mainstream approach to the album making it different from the rest.
Upside Down is a mixture of many genres, hip-hop, punk, R&B to name a few – making this an album for everyone as the band transcends back to their more pop sound, this album is sure to hit the charts.
‘Uncontainable’ brings back memories from Set It Off’s earlier days, and it’s a refreshing track amongst the rest that reminds us of exactly why we love them so much. While being compared to hit songs from Fall Out Boy, this track starts out with vocalist Cody Carson singing out an anthem for fans to never back down over an underlying guitar riff and trumpets.
Their darker, more dramatic record ‘Duality’ shows its influences with the fifth track of the album, ‘Want’, with appearances of a subtle pop vibe. Regardless of genres, this track has an uplifting, spiritual vibe and happens to be one of our favourites.
While some would argue that this album merges into one sound, the tracks sounding so alike to each other, there are certain songs that stand out from the rest, such as ‘Admit It’. With this song, you can hear the switch to a more hip-hop sound while reveling in grief, anger and heartbreak.
Another song that stands alone on this album is ‘Hypnotized’, a brilliant song to sing along to whether you’ve been stabbed in the back several times or not. It focuses in on the distasteful events in the band’s recent past, making it an interesting listen if you’re aware of what went down.
Closing the album with ‘Me W/O Us’, Carson shows just how smooth his vocals can be – ditching his usual slightly raspy tone for the vibe similar to one Bieber would have. It displays how wonderfully versatile this band can be, and although it might not be for everyone, it’s definitely for us.
