Album Review For The No More: New Navy – Lakeside

New Navy are an Australian based indie pop band who first appeared on the scene in 2010. The band consists of Luke O’Loughlin, James Chave-Dubois and Jamie Corson. Their debut EP ‘Uluwatu’ and in that was ‘Zimbabwe’. – Which manages to get ‘holiday’ to rhyme – which an impressive piece of work when you have a listen. But an astonishing five years on and four more singles they decided to call it quits. But before they do they have their first album to show off in style.

Their album ‘Lakeside’ suits the tracks very well with the track titles and their overall pop sound which sounds like the ocean. Kicking off with a 42 second track ‘Hello’ running smoothly into ‘Foreign Lands’ is lyrically very sad. Describing love and being by someone’s side is showing the band’s career evolve as it does in the rest of the album. ‘Rosaline’ is also on the topic of love, but in a much more upbeat and poppy tone. The chorus “Rosaline, you’re the feeling I never had” shows the love and respect for loved ones kept close by.

When ‘Pelican’ was released autumn 2014, it was the most interesting, and yet probably the weirdest song I think I’ve ever heard. First of all it’s a story about a Pelican on the lake eating all the fish its beak can take, in reality I think the lyrics are to explain how the band wanted to expand and achieve more than they would have liked to.

‘Runway’ feels like New Navy got a bit fed up. “If you’re tired of black and white and shade of grey” makes me think that they need to get away from the long days and nights intertwining together making them a little confused or trapped in making music. “If you keep on searching for another day then you should runaway”. After all they were a four-piece and now turned into three. Next song on the track list ‘Friends’ is telling their fans to stay friends after they have had the time of their lives and have a sense of pride. “Don’t take this wrong, but I wonder if we would need to pretend? Maybe we could be friends.”

Released single ‘Heaven’ is a slow and soothing tune with the piano and guitar combining to create that trademark pop beat. ‘High’ has a long introduction of the drums beating for 40 seconds before the beat kicks in and the guitar flicks into life. It’s extremely chilled out before moving swiftly on to ‘SoTired’.
Now this is where it all gets a bit sad and misty eyed. This song makes me feel like they wanted to quit. Then in the lyrics “God knows I tried, but over the ocean there’s a side that shut eyes” makes me feel that they couldn’t reach the wide world around them and with the piano making notes that low makes you feel sad for them because they music is amazing.

Final track ‘Goodbye’ was when they told their fans they would be no more and became ‘SongOfTheWeek’. Just have a listen to the lyrics yourself and that gives you they only story you need.
