Classic Tuesday: The Smiths

How does one go about tackling one of (if not) the greatest indie bands of all time, The Smiths.

Pioneers and Madchester revolutionaries The Smiths, are the essence of what it means to be indie. Their beautiful and poetic lyrics and fabulous riffs have provided the generations with some of the greatest indie hits of all time. NME crowned the group ‘most influential artists ever’ in 2002 and the band had seen numerous success in the charts.

The Smiths had several singles reach the UK top twenty and all four of their studio albums reached the UK top five, including one which topped the charts. The Smiths have the right to be called an inspiration to many, as they have been the back-bone influence for many bands such as The Stone Roses and Oasis.

‘Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now’, ‘Ask’, ‘This Charming Man’, ‘Please Please Let Me’, ‘Hang the DJ’. When you read this list in your head, you can’t help but say “tune” after every song.

The power duo of Morrissey and Marr hasn’t been duplicated since their departure from the band. Marr and Morrissey have seen great success in their own individual solo careers and through the years have caused both controversy and musical mayhem. Although in Morrissey’s case, I use the word royalty very very loosely.

Unquestionably, Morrissey’s and Marr’s lyrics come from a deep hole of self-loathing and utter miserableness with a wonderfully shitpile of reality and heartache. The band itself has gained its own physical form of pure sorrow, when you think of The Smiths you visual a whole-hearted personified being and that is utterly magical. There have been many bands over the years that have influenced an entire social subject, but the smiths are at the top of the food chain.

The Smiths will forever be listened to throughout the years to come and we will always be inspired by the miserable arsehole that is Stephen Patrick Morrissey. Although we all want a Smiths reunion, in 2009 Morrissey said that: “Id rather eat my own testicles than reunite The Smiths and that’s coming from a vegetarian”.
