The Magic Gang @ The Joiners, Southampton

The Magic Gang

2016 was a colossal year for The Magic Gang, and if the band’s first gig of 2017 is to go by they show no signs of slowing down. Their innocent indie pop vibes were channelled into an energetic and ferocious show with crowds completely losing themselves despite the occasional technical fault.

Starting the show was the brilliant Fever, and the small intimate venue was already predominantly filled up despite Fever only having a 30 minute set. Greeting the crowd with a simple ‘hey how’s it going’ before continuing to smash a solid set of rock-inspired music. The lead singer’s vocal ability was incredible, commandeering the room’s full attention as they energetically bounced round the stage. Despite not many people being aware of Fever the four-piece put on an incredible show and performed a very memorable show, particularly with their heavier final song.

After Fever, those at the sold-out gig gradually became restless as the lights dimmed and smoke came pouring from the machines. As the Brighton band took to the stage the inevitable surge of bodies began and it was obvious it was going to be a lively gig. The Magic Gang had everyone’s full attention as they ripped through a set list including all the classics alongside a few new tracks.

The Joiners was the perfect venue for The Magic Gang as riffs bounced off the walls and the infectious crowds were drawn deeper into the spectacle, constantly bopping and starting spontaneous pits at every available opportunity.

Unsurprisingly Jasmine, All This Way and Lady Please were all highlights and the energy fuelled crowd made the gig an even more intense and quality experience. The new songs The Magic Gang revealed appear to follow a similar formula to previous releases, solid entries and they all went down very well with the whole of The Joiners getting behind the band.

The Magic Gang have definitely set a precedent for their 2017 demonstrating the energy they can bring to live shows whilst retaining the cleanness of their releases. With their forthcoming shows with supporting Circa Waves alongside INHEAVEN and new work to be released, The Magic Gang are strong contenders to replicate the success they had in 2016.
