EP Review: The Recoupes – Anna

The Recoupes

Meet The Recoupes, the unsigned indie rock band of four 18 year olds hailing from Essex/London who take inspiration from the likes of Catfish and The Bottlemen and The Libertines.

After receiving 5 star iTunes reviews for the release of their debut EP ‘Here You Go’ last December, the foursome are set to release their brand new EP titled ‘Anna’ this Saturday (9th July). The EP in its entirety screams easy listening indie, the vibe of classic upbeat indie with its familiar-esque guitar riffs and heavy cymbal work permeates the record.

The release opens with the relatable title ‘Drunk Messages’, frontman Alan Li softly rasps the immediately catchy lyrics after the guitar heavy, Circa Waves styled intro. The occasional claps make for an abundantly lively and enjoyable track which I can easily envision to be a fan favourite during a live set. Although, saying that, all the tracks on the EP seem to have the same energetic style which is why I declared it as such a pleasant listen.

Title track ‘Anna’ follows with a somewhat more anthemic feel; the sort of thing you could imagine to be played in the middle of a field on a bright summer’s day (just like The Libertines would). Li seemingly sings about a new found love – a connection which involves a lot of worrying and beautiful girl called Anna. The EP is drawn to a finish with the more downbeat breakup tracks ‘Please Don’t’ – is Anna the girl who wants to leave?, and arena-ready rocky guitar track ‘Complications’.

The contradictory EP consistently presents emotional and down to earth lyricism fronted by an exhilarating sense of summery indie rock with the influences transparently shown through the guitars and drums used;  this is why it’s a successful sophomore EP.

I’d advise you to keep an eye on The Recoupes as they announce more exciting releases and gigs in the future!
