EP Review: The Curious Incident – Penny Lonesome

Coming from London the indie pop/rock creators ‘The Curious Incident’ have added a Caribbean twist to the music that’s like “Jerk Chicken and Lemonade and makes your troubles melt away.”

Members consist of; Cavey Roberts (Lead Vocals & Guitars), Dan Bowery (Bass & Vocals), Mirko Piconese (Lead Guitars & Vocals), and Diego Diaz (Drums). They have been regarded to sound the likes of; Crystal Fighters, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Vampire Weekend and UB40. So if that takes your fancy then they’re well worth a listen.

The bands new EP ‘Penny Lonesome’ came out on October 30th and have carved out a rather niche audience for themselves in the British and South African music scenes. It is an interesting case, seeing as they are a band that is more popular in South Africa than they are in their own home country, but I guess in a scene that practically created indie rock bands – it is difficult to break through into the mainstream eye. Nevertheless, The Curious Incident have made themselves a name in their own indie are is something of a rarity to see a UK band to tour the South African club scene.

This band know how to make some really funky melodies that really kick off as soon as it starts, ‘Money’ starts off the record and gets your toe tapping from the first note, with a sort of samba vibe to the song which really shouldn’t work but does so well here – and this continues on to Diane too, which brings together simple melodies into a melee of amazing sounds, it’s like organised chaos and it’s awesome to listen to.

I think for me in this confusion of sound, the use of repetition is used a little too much, the hooks are infectious, there is no denying that on Penny Lonesome, but there’s no real construction of good choruses, tracks such as ‘Please Don’t Say’ lack depth, and it feels like it’s made up for in tracks too late such as in The Hunt which really shows how good they can be. This EP really shows their strength lies in the music they make.

Penny Lonesome is a full of energy, a bunch of tracks that sit incredibly well together, the production really accentuating the interesting sounds. Penny Lonesome should be a disharmony, but it works perfectly together and makes for a fun listen. My favourites are ‘The Hunt’ and ‘Diane.’
