CloseUp Festival exclusive interview with headliners EKKAH

With less than one week to go until CloseUp Promotions Festival, we spoke to Rebekah Pennington and Rebecca Wilson better known as EKKAH, who will be headlining at Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen with their 80s inspired pop and R&B perfect for grooving on the dancefloor.

Read on to find out about their latest single, the difference between playing a festival or a gig and who should you see at CloseUp Festival.

First off, how does it feel to be headlining CloseUp Festival this year?

We are absolutely buzzing to be headlining this festival! We’ve played this venue before and went to a few club nights there, it’s always good vibes.

What do you think the response has been to your latest single ‘Can’t Give It Up’?

Filming the video was a lot of fun, it still makes us lol watching it back plus all of the boys involved are mates and such legends. Recently an all girl dance group in America sent us a video of them using ‘Can’t Give it Up’ for a new performance of theirs which was really cool and nice to see people are having fun to our music.

Are there any more festivals you will be playing this year?

We’re doing Live @ Leeds this weekend which is one of our fave city festivals and a  bunch more dates over the summer but we’re mainly focusing on finishing the album.

You have played all over the place, as a band can you describe the differences between playing a festival and a headline show in a music venue?

The vibe of the crowd is very different from festival to venue, people transform into higher beings at festivals!! haha. It’s quite interesting how festival spaces are much bigger than some venues but everyone still feels so close, it’s that festival love?

How would you like people to respond to your music? Do you wish to connect emotionally with the audience or is it just about having a party?

We write a lot of our songs about our own personal experiences and we’d love to know that people connect emotionally to our music.

Everyone has that one friend they share amazing times but also bad times with and that friendship and experiences is what inspires our songs. We want to share those feelings with our fans and tell them we all feel the same. We also love to write party songs and the idea of people channeling their feelings into dancing at one of our shows or alone in their bedrooms feels awesome!!

Who else would you recommend to see at CloseUp Festival?

Everyone on the line up is owning it, but we’re particularly looking forward to seeing Glass Peaks and Sasha Brown.

Finally, what do you have in store over the next few months?

We’ll be playing some shows, finishing our album and partying all summer!!

Ekkah will be headlining the main stage at CloseUp Festival, you can still buy via TicketWeb here and watch their video for ‘Can’t Give It Up’ below.

This was by far the hardest category to decide upon as there were many amazing new tracks from an array of bands which impressed us over the year. After dwindling it down to just a shortlist of 10 tracks, we have finally agreed on a winner, Sundara Karma.
