Boardmasters Exclusive Interview – Spring King

Less than a week until Boardmasters kicks off and reverb-mad Spring King have given us an exclusive chat as to what they’re looking forward to. Not only that, but they talk about their musical influences and recommend who else to keep an eye out for in the indie world!

Stephen McMahon: Firstly, what have you been up to as an band, and give us an insight to the unique style of music you create.

Spring King: As a band we’ve been on tour for the most part of this year. It’s insane to think how much ground you can cover as a band on the road, and it’s always a laugh! We’ve just released our debut album ‘Tell Me If You Like To’ which came out on June 10th and since then we’ve been playing the UK Summer festivals and also made a trip over to Australia to play Splendour in The Grass as well as two side shows with Beach Slang who are from the US. The music we play is a blend of lots of influences. We love garage rock but also classic 60s pop music. People have described us as somewhere between The Ramones and The Beach Boys.

Stephen McMahon: When it comes to the reception of your debut album, how did that go down? Was it what you expected?

Spring King: The reception to our album was more than we ever expected. Our fans always message us to tell us how much they enjoy it and it’s really evident at shows when everyone sings along. We want to play it as much as possible live to both new and old fans in as many countries as we can visit whilst having a good time as a band.

Stephen McMahon: What initially attracted you to Boardmasters, and made you want to take part in it?

Spring King: A few friends have played the festival in the past and initially when we were offered it last year we were really pumped about it. We’d heard so many good things and now we’re playing again – it’ll be a sweet time for sure. The line up is really good this year, and hopefully it’s gonna be a wild show!

Stephen McMahon: You’re not entirely new to performing, you have played all over the place, as a band can you describe the differences between playing a festival and a headline show in a music venue

Spring King: Playing a festival brings in people that may never have come to your shows. Passers by end up staying a lot of the time and that’s pretty exciting to see from the stage. We think headline shows have their own perks, most of the people coming to the shows are up for a mad one as they’re already familiar with our music. Playing is always an exciting experience at both festivals and headline shows.

Stephen McMahon: Your set at Boardmasters is Friday, Main Stage. What can we expect from your set in particular?

Spring King: Expect a lot of energy in our set – the tunes are pretty fast and travel hours in a van to give it everything we’ve got. We want to get people moving and having a good time, that’s what we’re about.

Stephen McMahon: Who would you recommend to also go see at Boardmasters?

Spring King: Most definitely VANT, they are good friends of ours and lovely guys. They play hard too and are talented as hell. Also check out White Denim, The Big Moon, Kagoule, Wolf Alice and Hannah Lou Clark.

Stephen McMahon: Where are you heading in the future? whats the plan?

Spring King: We’re heading out on a headline tour of Europe. We’ll be visiting loads of UK cities as well as Germany, France, Netherlands and Belgium. After that we will sit down and write some more music!

Stephen McMahon: Lastly whats the best 3 things about board masters that you are looking forward to?

Spring King: Well the music for sure and the food. Last year the food was great on site, there’s some cool trucks. we’re also hoping we can get some time to get in the water and have a swim.
